Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya – OVA

SPOILER Summary/Synopsis:

It is time for the school’s sports festival, but when the girls see a male teacher apparently wanting sexual favors if Taiga’s class doesn’t win, the girls go all out to master dancing, which is one of the events. Miyu isn’t good at it, but practices hard. The evening before the festival, Miyu is worried, so Ilya tries to teach her why dancing is important. On the day of the festival, Taiga asks them to win without explaining, and she’s happy when the class is psyched to help her. The sports festival begins and by the time all events are done, all of the classes are pretty much even, leaving only the dance routine.

The girls do their dance routine and nail it. Miyu and Ilya get mana help from Ruby and Sapphire to help with their weariness from long practice sessions. This results in the two of them appearing to sparkle. As a result of the girls’ dance routine, their class wins the competition. Miyu is worried that they cheated, but Ilya reminds her it was to save Taiga. Taiga congratulates the class on winning, and reveals that she’s won a large amount of meat. Thus, the girls realize that the male teacher wasn’t actually threatening Taiga sexually, but was actually after the meat prize.  As such, the class invites themselves to Tiaga’s place for a meat party.

Thoughts/Review:

Ah, so good getting back into the world of Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya.  ^_^

Although this episode was pretty much by the numbers, it was still pretty enjoyable.  It was easy to see that the girls would have misunderstood the male teacher’s remarks to Taiga. It was also easy to figure out that the girls would do whatever it took to win, after which they’d learn the truth and then we’d get our final gag, which in this case was Taiga’s precious meat being used to feed her students.

Although we have a sports festival here, the episode pretty much doesn’t touch the actual events. We see still shots of traditional events that long time anime (and manga) fans have seen plenty of times before. Since we know Ilya and Miyu will rock at the regular sport festival stuff, I had no problem with them skipping it.

It was cute that Ilya couldn’t dance well. She brought her usual drive and determination to practicing, which I liked, even if it was predictable. Ilya returning to help Miyu on the evening before was also predictable, as was their chat afterward, but it didn’t bother me at all.

As to the dance routine, it was fun to watch, especially with Ilya and Miyu being all sparkly. I liked that Miyu brought up the notion of cheating since she and Ilya were being aided by Ruby and Sapphire, because that is what they were doing. Of course, since it was to help Taiga, well its OK, right? ^_~

I loved Tatsuko doing her Michael Jackson stuff, complete with moonwalking. Having an eyecatch with Tatsuko in Michael Jackson garb made me laugh.

Finally, Luvia and Rin get a cameo at the end, where Rin is Luvia’s maid. I don’t remember that being an element of the original TV series, but it was still humorous.

In the end, this was just a fun, filler episode to whet our appetite for the forthcoming Fate/kaleid liner Prisma☆Illya 2wei! series, which I plan to episode blog.
